I Need Help With This Site!

I'm asking anyone who is a fan of this site to become a co-writer for
it.  I have a new job that will take away from the amount of time I can
put into this website.  I'm probably only going to have time for a
couple of articles a week, which is hardly enough to keep visitors
coming back.  All you would have to do is e-mail me the article and I
would be able to post it and give you credit for it.

Have your opinion heard!  A different viewpoint would be great for
this site.  Please e-mail me if your interested.  My e-mail address is

Cowboys' Free Agency Mock

This is my final attempt at correctly guessing who the Cowboys will
sign in free agency.  These names aren't necessarily who I think we
should sign, but rather who we will sign.

All RFAs and ERFAs will be re-signed.

Drew Bledsoe will be cut.

Marc Colombo, Al Johnson, Al Singleton, and Kenyon
Coleman will not re-sign.

There is a decent chance Colombo comes back, but I don't see it
happening if a deal doesn't get done before the start of free
agency.  We are probably going to make a run at Leonard Davis
and I don't see us giving big money to three offensive lineman
especially to Colombo who was solid, but not really worthy of big
money.   I would like to have Coleman back, but his performance
from last season will draw plenty of interest from other teams.

Sign

G/T Leonard Davis - We are rumored to be extremely interested
in acquiring his services.  I'm not a fan of his.  He is huge and
extremely talented, but he is soft and he hasn't lived up to his
status as the #2 overall pick.   I would much rather have Kris
Dielman for the price we will have to pay.  The winning bidder for
this underachiever will give him a six year deal worth between 30 &
35 million.

The main positive I see in bringing in Davis is his versatility.  He
played left tackle last season, right tackle his first few seasons, but
he was at his best when he played guard.  If we lose Colombo, he
would play which ever position we couldn't plug in with an unknown.
McQuistan, Procter, Rivera, and Fabini would all be vying for the
final O-line spot even though they don't all play the same position.
We would take the best of those four and plug in Davis at the other
spot on the right side.  Then, we will probably use a first day pick at
whichever spot Davis doesn't fit into.

Tim Rattay - This guy seems to be the perfect fit for backup
quarterback.  His career stats are really good, and his playing style
is similar to Tony Romo's.  Rattay is definitely a guy who can come
in and play pretty well for a short stretch of games.

Tully Banta-Cain - We need some help rushing the passer with
Greg Ellis's future in doubt.  Banta-Cain isn't a great player, but he
is a decent player who still has some upside.  These are the types
of guys you want to sign.  Banta-Cain's best football is ahead of
him.  If Ellis can't come back, Tully would be a guy that could step
in and get seven sacks a year which is pretty good for a mid-level
guy.  This guy will cost us at least 5 years and 20 million.

K Martin Gramatica - I don't see why we wouldn't bring back
Gramatica.  He did a good job for us.  We should bring in a rookie
to compete with him and we should be okay at kicker.

Other Big Name Options

G Kris Dielman
G Eric Steinbach
CB Nate Clements
FS Deon Grant
OLB Adalius Thomas

Overview

I would be happy if we came out of free agency with those four
guys.  Those signing would mean we were very active in free
agency, but it also means that we didn't throw away our future to
get better now.  Filling our major needs at offensive line and
outside linebacker allows us to focus on getting a free safety and
wide receiver with our first two draft picks.

     Spend Now
By:  Ed Cormier

If Jerry is to turn this franchise around he needs to do it now. That
means spending money. The cap will rise every year though it
could be in smaller increments. However the salaries will continue
to rise at an exponential rate. Should the Cowboys be able to sign
Dielman while he is still young he will be cheaper this year than next.

Dielman is the best free agent guard that will be on the market. If
Jerry wants an established pass rusher then sign Adalius Thomas.
It will cost for sure , but how much will it cost next year to sign a
prominent pass rusher? Free agency as we well know is not a be all
end all instant fix to a teams problems .

The cap and its impact can be a convoluted thing to understand
sometimes but what good does it do you to be 20 mil under the
cap. This is one reason I am in favor of trying to renegotiate
DeMarcus Ware's contract. He will be significantly harder to resign
in 2 years than he would be now.  Look at the Eagles, they have
resigned most of their o-line and have created continuity on their o
line for years to come.

The Cowboys have very few players worthy of signing to long term
contracts. Roy Williams was a waste of money and will count
against the cap in a big way. I am in favor of releasing him after this
season if he is as bad as he was last year. This would be the only
reason in my opinion to remain under the cap in such a large way.
Newman is not worthy of a long term extension. He has been
average for being such a high draft choice.

This draft is a very, very important draft. Dallas needs to have a
Saints type of draft (06) and have some young talent to replace the
aging players like Flozell. McQuistan will start at RT next season. If
he does well he needs to be locked up long term. Romo needs to
be taken care of this year and not next. He will be considerably
more expensive next year. Jerry doesn't need to be careless with
his spending but now is the time to spend for quality free agents. If
Dallas just signs 1 free agent and its the right value then its ok.
Drafting the right players can be done if Jerry will listen to people
who know more than he does. The draft is how you stockpile talent
for a chance at being good for a lengthy amount of time. Lets hope
that Jerry will acquiesce to the people who are wiser than he is
