I Need Help With This Site!
I'm asking anyone who is a fan of this site to become a co-writer for
it. I have a new job that will take away from the amount of time I can
put into this website. I'm probably only going to have time for a
couple of articles a week, which is hardly enough to keep visitors
coming back. All you would have to do is e-mail me the article and I
would be able to post it and give you credit for it.
Have your opinion heard! A different viewpoint would be great for
this site. Please e-mail me if your interested. My e-mail address is

Cowboy's Trivia Question of the Week!
What college did Troy Aikman first attend?
Last Week's Answer: Sonoma State

Sittin' Pretty
Any time a team can go into the draft without any glaring
weaknesses they are in great shape. The reason being they can
take the best player available instead of taking an inferior talent at a
position of absolute need. Now, we are used to hearing the term
best player available, but it has never really been a reality for the
Dallas Cowboys because we've always had glaring needs coming
into the draft.
That definitely isn't the case this season. We have filled all our
big-time needs already. This is huge because we can take
whatever position we want, not to mention it is always bad to rely on
a rookie to fill a hole because most rookies aren't ready to
contribute until their 2nd or 3rd season.
Baring injury, our starters on opening weekend are already on the
roster. No matter what positions we take in the first few rounds,
none of these players are likely to play. This opens up the door for
us to take whoever we see fit.
I would recommend taking a wide receiver or cornerback, two
positions with relatively steep learning curves. You don't want to
take a WR in the 1st round when you need help immediately. We
don't, so why not make an investment that will pay of in 2 or 3
seasons when you need an infusion of talent.
This lack of needs makes our 1st pick impossible to predict. I'd say
there is an excellent chance we will end up taking a player who slips
out of the Top 15. It might be a guy who isn't even on your radar at
a position that isn't either.
If I had to guess though, I would predict we would take a WR or DB.
Reggie Nelson is a definite option because he would probably fit the
bill of BPA. We signed Hamlin, but he isn't a slam dunk free safety
of the future. Cornerbacks like Darrell Revis or Chris Houston
would be great picks although I'd be surprised if they are available
at #22. Wide Receiver is the only position I see still having good
value that far back in the 1st round. Dwayne Bowe, Robert
Meachem, or Sidney Rice would be great picks there.
I know I'm getting pumped for the draft. Its exciting to think that we
have a great chance to get some really good players. We really
need to make the right picks. I don't care who we draft or at what
positions as long as we get good players. There is no excuse for us
not to have a good draft because we aren't handicapped by needs
that have to be filled. We aren't in a position where we have to
reach for a player at a certain position. So Jerry, you have the
ammo to have an amazing draft class, so lets make it happen.
Draft Targets: Defensive Back
Defensive back is another top priority for the Cowboys heading into
the draft. We could use help at cornerback or free safety if they
value is right. This is a very strong defensive back class. Our best
value with our 1st round pick will most likely be at defensive back or
wide receiver. There should be some really good players still
available at #22. Leon Hall isn't ranked because he figures to be
gone by our pick.
I would think we would be looking away from free safety after the
signing of Ken Hamlin. It probably does keep us from drafting one,
but we could do a lot worse than drafting Reggie Nelson because
none of our free safeties on our team have the kind of ability he
has. Again, we probably won't take him, but it wouldn't totally
surprise men.
The first four guys are 1st round possibilities. McCauley and Wright
are early 2nd round picks who are out of reach unless we trade
back. The last four guys are all solid 2nd round prospects.
1. Reggie Nelson 5'11 198 4.45 Florida
Nelson is the 2nd best defensive back in this draft as far as I'm
concerned. He might be the biggest defensive playmaker in the
draft. He is always around the football. He is very athletic and he
has terrific range. He is physical and plays much bigger than he is.
He has limited experience and his intelligence has been questioned.
2. Chris Houston 5'10 185 4.32 Arkansas
Houston is the best pure cover corner in this draft. He has fluid hips
and amazing speed and athleticism. He has all the physical tools to
become a shutdown corner. He is short, but he is physical and he
will support the run. He has decent ball skills and instincts. He is a
little to overconfident at times and he is a guy who is still very raw.
He wasn't productive until his senior season. He made a name for
himself by shutting down Bowe, Meachem, and Jarrett this season,
although Sidney Rice killed him.
3. Darrell Revis 6'0 204 4.40 Pittsburgh
Revis is a big, physical corner with great athleticism for his size. He
is a great tackler who loves to come up and hit the running back.
He has good instincts and ball skills. He is a good punt returner.
He is a good cover corner, but he lacks amazing athleticism that a
guy like Houston possesses.
4. Aaron Ross 6'1 192 4.48 Texas
Ross one the Thorpe Award given to the nation's top defensive
back. He has great size. He has amazing ball skills. He isn't an
amazing athlete, but he is good enough when you combine his
athleticism with his size and ball skills. He is a good return man. He
will support the run. He lacks blazing speed and he needs to
become more physical with opposing receivers. He didn't even start
until his senior season which makes you wonder where he has been
the past few seasons.
5. Marcus McCauley 6'1 203 4.39 Fresno St.
He is a physical corner with great size and speed. He is amazingly
athletic for a man his size. He is a hardworking player with good
instincts. His technique is inconsistent. He doesn't intercept many
passes and he gets burned a lot. He had a great junior season, but
followed it up with a horrible senior campaign.
6. Eric Wright 5'11 192 4.36 UNLV
Amazing athlete. Can turn and run with anyone. Pretty much
identical to Chris Houston expect for the off-the-field stuff and the
fact that he isn't quite as physical. Kicked out of USC after his
freshman year. Minor injury and major character concerns.
7. Eric Weddle 5'11 203 4.48 Utah
I absolutely love this guy as a football player. He played a bunch of
different positions. Amazing instincts and ball skills. He is very
mature and the ultimate team player. He is a good athlete
especially for a safety. Experience at both corner and safety. One
of those rare safeties who could line up and cover the slot guy. He
played in a weak conference. An overachiever who isn't the most
gifted athletically.
8. Josh Wilson 5'9 189 4.39 Maryland
Superb athlete. Very physical for his size. Blazing speed, but not
just a track star in pads, he is a true football player. Again, very
similar to Chris Houston. He breaks up a lot of passes, but he only
has two career picks. He needs technique work, but what
cornerback doesn't.
9. David Irons 5'10 190 4.44 Auburn
Irons is a tough and physical corner who plays bigger than he is.
He is a good, not great athlete. He knocks down a bunch of passes.
He has durability concerns. His instincts and ball skills are only
average as he doesn't make many big plays.
10. Fred Bennett 6'1 196 4.46 South Carolina
Good speed and athleticism. Great height. Gets his hands on a
bunch of passes with 24 career PBU and 9 career INTs. Major
upside. Underachiever who gets burned too much. Needs to be
more physical.
