I Need Help With This Site!

I'm asking anyone who is a fan of this site to become a co-writer for
it.  I have a new job that will take away from the amount of time I can
put into this website.  I'm probably only going to have time for a
couple of articles a week, which is hardly enough to keep visitors
coming back.  All you would have to do is e-mail me the article and I
would be able to post it and give you credit for it.

Have your opinion heard!  A different viewpoint would be great for
this site.  Please e-mail me if your interested.  My e-mail address is

Breakin' Down the Roster:  Wide Receiver

Perhaps no position on the Dallas Cowboys' roster has more depth
or talent than wide receiver.  Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens, and
Patrick Crayton along with Jason Witten make what is perhaps the
most potent receiving corp in the NFL.

The top end of our receiver depth chart is aging, but still
outstanding.  Both Glenn and Owens possess great speed even at
their age.  They can still get by the best of corners.  The only worry
with these guys are injuries.  Terry Glenn has somehow stayed
healthy the past two seasons, but he has a long history of injuries.
Terrell Owens has had a bevy of injuries over the past three
seasons.  I'm not worried about these guys slowing down, but I am
worried about them staying on the field.

If Glenn and Owens miss some time with injury, we should be fine
because we have great depth.  Patrick Crayton could start for some
teams.  He has the best hands on the team and he will be a starter
in this league by 2008 (hopefully with us).  Behind him we have Sam
Hurd, Miles Austin, Jameel Richardson, and Isiah Stanback.  Hurd
and Austin looked good as rookies last season.  Both played well
on special teams and both have some potential at receiver.  Hurd
did a good job in the Cardinals game when he started in place of
Terry Glenn.

Miles Austin is the real guy to watch though.  Mel Kiper openly
wondered why this guy wasn't drafted.  He had him going in the 4th
Round two years ago.  After hearing this I dug up some info on the
guy.  He averaged 22 yards a catch his senior season.  He also ran
a 4.47 40 at the Combine which is pretty impressive when you
consider he is 6'3 220.  Although he isn't a true burner, he seems
to be a pretty fluid and athletic guy as evidence by his success on
kick-off returns.

This year we signed Jameel Richardson and drafted Isiah Stanback.
Richardson played in Canada and was a pretty hod commodity.   I
wouldn't be surprised if he made our roster.  You guys know about
Stanback.  We are going to convert him to wide receiver.  He seems
to ooze potential at that position.

I think six of the first seven guys I've mentioned here will make the
team.  The top three are locks unless we decide to can Owens
which doesn't seem likely at all.  I think Austin will make the team
after being such a good returner last season.  He also has more
upside than Hurd as a receiver although Hurd is more polished.  I
think Hurd will probably beat out Richardson though.  Stanback is
virtually a lock because he is a 4th round pick although last year's
4th rounder didn't make the team.  That was a little different
situation though.  Stanback is a developmental guy.  Green was a
guy that was expected to come in and win the return job from Day 1.

The two rookie free agents Rabb and Jefferson don't seem to have
much of a shot at making the team.  They will probably be battling
for spots on the practice squad.
Breakin' Down the Roster:  Fullbacks/Tight Ends

One intriguing storyline that will fly under the radar this summer will
be who wins the 11th spot on the offense.  You have your five
lineman, your two receivers, the quarterback, a tight end, and a
running back, but what about the other spot.  This will be a battle
between Anthony Fasano and two young fullbacks.

Anthony Fasano certainly should be a starter since we did spend a
2nd round pick on him, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Jason Garrett seems intent on bringing the fullback back into the
offense.  I will say though that the best player of the bunch will start
because if one thing is clear about Wade Phillips, it is that he gets
the best players on the field no matter if he fits exactly what the
coach is looking for in a prototype.  He will build his defense around
the players he has, and he will expect Garrett and Sparano to do
the same with the offense.

The two guys I see battling Fasano for the starting spots are
fullbacks Deon Anderson and Oliver Hoyte.  Lousaka Polite is
amazingly still on the roster after doing absolutely nothing for three
seasons.  He should be as good as gone.  Anderson is a rookie
with good upside.  He seems to be what Garrett is looking for with
his combination of athleticism, blocking, and pass catching ability.
Only time will tell though if he will be a good player.  Just because
he is the prototype doesn't mean he can play football.

Oliver Hoyte doesn't fit the prototype Garrett wants because he
doesn't have good hands, but this dude can block so unless
Anderson is the second coming of Moose in his first season, expect
Hoyte to at last carve his niche as the bruising blocking fullback if
he can return to early season form.  I'm interested to see how Hoyte
plays this season.  At the beginning of the year, he was a
dominating blocker.  He had never played the position before and
he was having fun just blowing people up.  By about the sixth game
though I think he realized playing fullback as fun as he thought.  He
had some nagging injuries that slowed him down and the front
office seemed to sour on him a bit.  Hopefully he can turn it around
next season.

If I had to guess who would start, I would probably say that it
depends on what package we start the game in.  Anthony Fasano
will get his reps because he is a decent player who gives our
offense another pass catcher.  One of the fullbacks will play too
though because Fasano isn't a good enough blocker to
consistently supplement the running game.  Its pretty safe to say
that it will be a position by committee with two or three solid players
contributing.  The only guy I can see winning the job outright is
Anderson because he is a good blocker and receiver, but I don't
see that happening because he is just a rookie.

As far as the guys who will end up on the opening day roster, I'd
say your guess is as good as mine.   We have absolutely no quality
depth at tight end behind Witten and Fasano.  Tony Curtis will
probably be the 3rd tight end, but I wouldn't be totally surprised if
we only keep two on the roster.  Again, you don't keep guys at
certain positions because the Madden roster breakdown tells you
you should.  A 3rd TE will have to excel on special teams to make
the team.  I'm not sure how good a special teams guy Curtis is.  We
will keep two fullbacks because of the lack of depth at tight end and
the special teams talent at the position.  Oliver Hoye and Deon
Anderson can make the team as special teams players alone.
