Last Week's Answer:
Purdue

Colts vs. Cowboys Game Notes
Oliver Hoyte looked great last night. He was absolutely blowing the
Colts linebackers up. He knocked a Colts LB 2 yards backwards in
the hole on the first 3rd & 1 on the Cowboys opening drive. He
sprung Jones for what was a sizeable gain.
Tyson Thompson didn't look very explosive. He struggled with his
returns and he doesn't seem to have the same burst he had last
pre-season running the ball.
Leonard Davis moves really well for his size. I saw him pulling on
several running plays including one that he pancaked Gary Brackett
on.
I thought the offensive line did a decent job. The run blocking
wasn't great, but the pass blocking was good. Doug Free held his
own against Dwight Freeney and he really didn't get that much help.
McQuistan looked solid as well.
Gramatica looked great on kick-offs. His first two went three yards
deep in the endzone with solid hang-time. Folk's first kick-off only
made it to the 10, but his last one went four yards into the endzone.
He doesn't seem to have great hang-time though. Folk has been
disappointing with the kick-offs, but he has been better than
expected with his place kicking. We might keep two kickers just
because we like Folk so much, but we won't be bringing two to the
games because Folk isn't any better on kick-offs than Gramatica.
The biggest concern I have following this game was the kick-off
coverage unit. Nearly every return the Colts had was over 30 yards
and one of them went for nearly 50.
We didn't get much of a pass rush with the first team. Ware got
some pressure, but Anthony Spencer was non-existent. Ferguson
and Canty where disruptive, but they missed a chance to stuff Addai
for a big loss.
The cornerbacks looked pretty good. Anthony Henry had a nice
pass deflection that forced the early Colts field goal.
Anthony Fasano caught three passes on the 2nd series. It appears
that he will be a much bigger part of the offense this season. He
really seems to be coming on.
Marion Barber was running hard as always. On one play it literally
took four Colts to corral him. He also had a sweet juke move
against quick CB Tim Jennings and a few nice catches underneath.
Julius Jones looked fast, but he still doesn't have any power.
Tony Romo looked sharp. His only missed completion was an
on-purpose overthrow of a covered Terrell Owens although he did
miss Witten for a probable TD on the play.
The defense was pretty conservative. I saw a few stunts, but no
blitzes to speak of.
Corey Procter was high on two shotgun snaps with Brad Johnson
under center. The 2nd one was fumbled by Johnson, but it was
Johnson's fault because the snap wasn't that bad.
Johnson wasn't real impressive throwing the ball. He left a bunch of
passes short and he definitely has no arm strength whatsoever.
Matt Moore had a really good game I thought. He made a few nice
accurate passes to Tony Curtis who looked big and athletic. Moore
definitely has the edge on the 3rd QB spot because Bartel really
didn't get throw the ball any. If Moore keeps showing promise then
we will have to keep him on the 53-man roster because he won't
make it through waivers.
Remi Ayodele was the 2nd team nose tackle for what its worth. He
wasn't real impressive though. I'm beginning to think we might not
even keep a true nose tackle because none of the guys look
impressive. It scares me to do that, but we did do it last season.
We are in trouble though if Fergy gets hurt.
Alex Obomese tipped the pass that Keith Davis returned for a
touchdown. He isn't an elite pass rusher by any stretch, but he has
the athletic ability to be a good player.
Junior Glymph and Jay Ratliff met at Jim Sorgi for a sack in the 2nd
half. Ratliff continues to be our most disruptive defensive lineman.
Bobby Carpenter made a few plays. He saw a bunch of time at the
nickel defensive end. He didn't get a lot of pressure, but he showed
off a nice spin move that would probably work on someone other
than a starting left tackle. This versatility is why we drafted him, but
he will never be a dominating edge rusher.
Tony Curtis appears to have the early lead for the 3rd tight end
spot. He is big and athletic, but he still can't block. Adam Bergen
didn't really impress in either facet. I liked Andy Thorn, but he has
already been cut. I guess that shows you what I know.
Gramatica nailed a 47 yarder with plenty to spare. At this point I
think I'd be comfortable with either guy. They both are definitely a
lot better than Mike Vanderjagt.
I couldn't really handicap the backup cornerback spots. Joey
Thomas had an interception, but he was actually beaten on the play
the ball was just late and under thrown.
I was impressed with the few amount of penalties we had for the first
game. Hopefully we can keep that up.
The only injuries I noticed where to Doug Free and Stephen Bowen.
Neither seemed to be serious.
Another Fan's Perspective
By: Ed Cormier
The o line looked like it has potential to be the best we have had in
awhile. Davis looked better in 1 quarter with Dallas than he did his
whole career in Arizona. If he continues with the hustle we just may
have an anchor that we have so desperately needed. Gurode
looked good. There were certainly some mis-steps with the o line
but overall I think we have some depth. Unlike we have had in a long
time.
Brad Johnson was a waste of money. Ask any Viking fan and they will
tell you he has no game left. I was very very disappointed with his
showing and I think this will prove to be another Jerry Jones gaffe.
Johnson's signing was Jerry again thinking he knows football. We
are stuck with him now and You have to get down on your knees
and pray that Romo remains healthy.
Tyson Thompson looked tenative in his cuts. I think a couple of more
games and he will get his confidence back. He certainly has the
speed. I was not impressed with Marion Barber at all. I know you all
are thinking , how can you say that. Barber looked very slow
Thursday night . I know everyone likes his toughness and what but if
he ran like that from the starters role he would be out of commission
by October. Julius looked quick again. My take on the running back
situation , where are you Larry Johnson? Hoyte was a stud.
Hurd and Austin seem to have locked up two of the roster spots at
wr. I was not impressed with any other backup wr though I think
Urban has a chance. Tight end is set.
Now to my pet peeve, the defense. I was totally unimpressed.
Spears and Canty looked well like the Spears and Canty of old. Very
very average. It's time for Ratliff to be handed a starting de postion.
The guy is a force and I said it during last season and I have been
saying it this past off season. Ferguson looked solid but Dallas has
done a poor job at acquiring a backup. Very very dissapointing.
Glymph can just flat out rush the qb. I am tired of towing the
company line. I don't care if a guy was a higher draft choice. Let the
better players play. Why doesn't Dallas use it's best players ? Just
because Spears was a higher draft choice doesn't mean he is better
than Ratliff.
Bradie James again looks slow. I think Carpenter should start at ilb.
Spencer in my opinon will improve. However again if Glypmh is the
better pass rusher then use him. What you saw on Thursday night is
why I just absolutely despise the 3-4. You have to have stud line
backers and Dallas has continually drafted linebackers and it still
doesn't look like we have the right mix. With a four man line we
already have the guys in place. Akin Ayodele looked stuck in mud.
I thought Joey Thomas looked good. The sideline route that he
prevented he was just all over the wr and it was nice to see. He
stopped that play cold. I think he will be the 4th cb for Dallas. Henry
looks like the Henry we had the first season here pre-injury. He was
a stud his first 9 games here. The safety postions were terrible. Roy
Willaims was knocked backwards by the Colts backup running
backs. Was it just me or did I see Roy again getting lost in
coverage? All this talk he is gonna play in the box and what have
you won't fly. The offenses will dictate if Roy has to cover. If Dallas is
in a standard set then the offense goes 3 wide Roy is toast. This is
how New Orleans exposed Roy and teams will continue unless
Dallas can generate a pass rush. From what I saw on
Thursday there is no pass rush. I think Wade may have inherited a
defense that is better in Jerry's mind than it actually is.
All that said it was the first preseason game and there were some
good things on offense. Defense was very mediocre. I think Wade
needs to step up the pressure this week. I will be at the Dallas vs
Houston game and I don't think that will be an accurate measuring
stick for Dallas. The third pre season game is considered the game
that is most like the real thing. Houston is not who I want to have
measure my self to. However if Dallas performs poorly in that game
then it could prove to be along season.
Keep an eye on Lamar Woodley for the Steelers. I know Dallas had
some interest in him and he was taken in the second round.
