NFC East Breakdown:  New York Giants

Heading into the 2007 season I think one division stands out as
being a good bit weaker than it has been in recent years.  That
division is the NFC East.  The main reason for the change is the
New York Giants.

The prognosis for the New York Giants doesn't look to great for
this season.  Most teams don't undergo a noticeable loss in talent
over the off-season, but the Giants did.  Tiki Barber's retirement
makes a good team average at best.  The lost the best player in
the division and perhaps the entire conference.

If the Giants are to make a serious charge at the play-offs, the
offense must carry them.  They have some talent on offense, but
the burden falls on the shoulders of Eli Manning.  He has some
weapons around him and if he has a Pro Bowl caliber season then
you are looking at a fearsome offense.

The reality with Manning though is that he is erratic and probably
always will be.  He will have a good year, but they have offensive
line issues.  They will be a solid unit because of the talent at
receiver and tight end, but they won't be the elite unit needed to
carry this team into the play-offs.

The real weakness of this team appears to be the defense.
Michael Strahan isn't a huge loss because they do have Kiwanuka,
but it can't help them any.  Their front seven is solid but
unspectacular.  Their secondary looks like its going to be a
weakness again this season.  They have two average cover
safeties, but their real weakness is at cornerback.  They have
aging veterans who've lost a step and young guys who simply
aren't effective.  1st round pick Aaron Ross should help but it will
probably be a year or two before he makes a big difference.

Its hard to gauge how a special teams unit will perform.  They
should be average.  Lawrence Tynes and Jeff Feagles are a solid
kicker tandem but nothing to brag about.

Overall, the New York Giants will be an average team.  Losing Tiki
Barber makes their offense a lot less scary.  Their defense will
struggle to consistently stop people.  Their season largely
depends on Eli Manning.  I expect him to perform about how he did
last season.  He has been around awhile, and he is what he is.  I'm
prediction a 7-9 season for the New York Giants.
Cowboys/Texans Game Notes

I was sorely disappointed with the Cowboys' performance against
the Texans.  The offense was flat, the defense was flat, the special
teams were flat.  This game did a good job of bringing us fans back
down to earth.  The Cowboys are a good team, but they are by no
means perfect.

The first team offense wasn't totally inept, but they didn't perform
nearly as well as they should have.  The offensive line struggled to
pass protect and they couldn't open many running lanes.  Part of
the running problem was that the Texans were crowding the line.  I
pray that Terry Glenn is ready for the opener.

The defense struggled equally.   We couldn't stop the run.  Roy
Williams missed a tackle that sprung Green for a long run.  A side
note to this play, if you want to know how fast DeMarcus Ware is,
he tackled Green along with Anthony Henry at least fifty yards down
field.

The pass rush seemed to be non-existent.  Ware and Spencer had
some good moments, but they weren't consistent enough.  The
pass coverage was downright terrible.  I'm not sure Joey Thomas,
Nate Jones, or Jacques Reeves are worth a hoot.  Alan Ball
struggled too, but at least he is a rookie.

The two players that stood out to me on defense were Ken Hamlin
and Jay Ratliff.  Hamlin was roaming around and making some big
hits.  Ratliff was a disruptive force.  I saw him tackle the running
back ten yards downfield on two different occassions as well.

The only linebackers that had solid games were Kevin Burnett and
Bradie James.  Both made plays on inside blitzes.  Burnett was
injured, but it doesn't appear to be serious.

The special teams also sucked.  Our coverage team allowed a
92-yard return for a touchdown.  Martin Gramatica missed an extra
point.

The worst part about this performance was that nearly all of it was
our first teamers.  There wasn't a lot of evaluating to do with the
younger guys because they simply didn't play.  The third team
never saw the field.

The 2nd team offense looked solid.  Brad Johnson looked capable.
His only problem is that his accuracy is spotty at times.  He threw
high on a little hook that was intercepted but luckily an unrelated
illegal contact negated it.  Tyson Thompson looked solid, but
unspectacular.

Tony Romo had an average night.  His interception was a terribly
underthrown ball directed towards Terrell Owens.  He made some
good throws and he eluded the rush well.  Bobbled snaps continue
to be a problem.  You can tell he has problems finding guys open
consistenly without Terry Glenn.

Terrell Owens had a quiet night other than his 35 yard TD catch.  It
was a classic Philly route where he took the ball running full speed
and turned it up field leaving three defenders in his dust.  Hopefully
we will see more of this route.  He had a tough time because he was
double covered every play.

Overall it was a pretty spotty performance which isn't great
considering the 3rd pre-season game is considered the most
important.  We won't learn much from Thursday's game because
the first teamers might not even play a full quarter.  I'm definitely not
getting bummed about this performance, but it just shows that this
team does have its fair share of problems.
