Cowboys/Eagles Preview
I don't know about you guys, but I'm a little worried about this game.
First off it is a divisional road game at night. And second and most
importantly it is the Eagles. No team has beaten us to a pulp like
the Eagles the past six or seven years. I know they are only 3-4,
but that is the part that worries me the most.
We know the Eagles are desperate. This game is huge for them. If
they win, they are 4-4 and they are sitting in prime position for a
play-off spot. A loss means they will have to play nearly perfect the
rest of the way. We know the Eagles are a good team as it is
basically the same one that stormed back to win the division last
season. They are just waiting for a came to break out. I sure hope
it isn't this one.
This game will tell us a lot about this Cowboys football team. A loss
would still have us atop the NFC East, but I won't be as confident
that we are the best team in the conference. If we go into Philly on
a Sunday night and come away with a victory, it will say a lot about
this football team.
I think Wade Phillips will have his bunch ready. I think we've came
out and played fairly well in every game. We might have one part
of the team struggle in a game, but we haven't had a game where
every phase cam out flat. Against Buffalo Romo struggled, but the
defense picked up the slack until he got going.
Dallas Pass Offense vs. Philly Pass Defense
Advantage: Even
This is a match up that is very intriguing. On paper we have the
edge just as we do about every week. However, Jim Johnson
always seems to give our offensive line fits with his blitzing scheme.
We handled basically the same scheme pretty well against the
Giants, but I'm not sure former Eagles LB coach Steve Spaguolo is
quite in Johnson's league yet. Johnson frustrated Romo last
season on Christmas Day as he only threw for 146 yards and two
interceptions. We are going to need more production than that,
and I think we will get it. Look for a good game from Romo who
should be very confident and eager to perform after learning that
the team thinks highly enough of him to give him a big extension.
Dallas Run Offense vs. Philly Run Defense
Advantage: Even
The Eagles have had a pretty stout defense this season. They are
only allowing 16.7 points a game. Their run defense is giving up
about ninety yards a game. Expect a heavy dose of Marion Barber
as we attempt to soften up their front seven.
Philly Pass Offense vs. Dallas Pass Defense
Advantage: Dallas
This where we have an advantage on paper. It makes me nervous
actually saying we have an advantage with our pass defense but it
is true. McNabb has struggled a little this year finding receivers.
Even worse, the offensive line has struggled to pass protect. The
Giants had twelve sacks in their game earlier this season. McNabb
doesn't move around nearly as well as he is used to. He may hit a
big play or two against us, but I don't see them being able to
consistently move the ball against us through the air.
Philly Run Offense vs. Dallas Run Defense
Advantage: Dallas
This is another one that makes me nervous. The Eagles whole
offense has struggled this season. They haven't been able to run
the ball all that well. However, as you know, they always seem to
be able to run the ball down our throats even when no other teams
can. They have a very physical offensive line that could cause us
some trouble. We need to be able to limit Brian Westbrook's
impact on this game as he is the only true impact player on their
offense.
Special Teams
Advantage: Even
David Akers is as good as it gets. The Eagles return teams aren't
great, but they can cover kicks better than we can. Matt McBriar
gives us a field position advantage which is huge in a possible low
scoring game.
Overall
I see this being the first true defensive slugfest the Cowboys have
played this season. The Eagles are going to give it all they have
and we better be ready to take a couple on the chin. I think we can
weather the storm and win a close game. Cowboys 16, Eagles 13.
