Jets/Cowboys Game Notes
Well, Thanksgiving Day gave me a chance to see both the Packers
and Cowboys back-to-back. After seeing both games I still see
Dallas being a bit better. Green Bay had a tougher opponent, but
they struggled. The Lions ran the ball very effectively against the
Packers. I hope we will be able to do the same. The Lions had
three great chances to score early in that game, but only came
away with a 6-0 lead. The Packers better not give Dallas chances
like that because they will look up and the score will be 17-0 in the
middle of the first quarter.
Our running game finally got back on track running for close to 180
yards against the Jets. Marion Barber had 103 yards and a
touchdown with Jones adding 64 yards. We will beat the Packers if
we do anything close to that kind of performance.
The Dallas defense looked dominant against the Jets. The
completely shutdown the run and they did an outstanding job
against the pass. The only chance you have of scoring against this
defense is if you have an explosive passing game. Fans get down
on our pass defense, but it is better than it is given credit for. First
off, it gets a lot of pressure because teams can't run the ball either
because they are ineffective or they are down by two touchdowns.
Yeah they struggle against a high powered offense, but look at our
offense. Every team that we play struggles to contain our offense.
Terence Newman's pick six pretty much finished the Jets. He now
has three interceptions on the year. If he can add another couple,
he should make his first Pro Bowl appearance. I'd just as soon him
not make it though, it is going to cost enough to re-sign him as it is.
Nate Clements got 8 yrs/80 mil and he is a similar guy who is good
but has never been to a Pro Bowl. We will probably get a bit of a
discount, but expect a contract close to that size in a couple of
years.
Chris Canty is establishing himself as a force on our defensive line.
He notched his third sack of the season which doesn't sound like
much. However, the guy usually doesn't play on passing downs. If
you can get four or five sacks a year out of him you are geting a
Pro Bowl caliber performance. He is the best run stopping
defensive end in the entire NFL. Teams are averaging under two
yards a carry his way. If he can get up to five sacks he might have
a shot at the Pro Bowl as a defensive tackle since that is basically
what he is.
Another draft pick that is finally paying dividends is Kevin Burnett.
He is a nickel linebacker, but he is routinely finding himself in the
game instead of Akin Ayodele. He gives us a more athletic option at
WILB which is good because his partner in the middle is a great
player, but we all know Bradie James isn't the most athletic guy.
Akin Ayodele is solid, but I'm glad to see his getting phased out.
Kevin Burnett has the playmaking ability that we need on our
defense. He is playing well this season and he is being rewarded.
He is a perfect fit for the old spot Donnie Edwards played in San
Diego. He is bigger than Edwards, but he is definitely our most
athletic true linebacker. He is also fifth on the team with tackles with
forty one spot ahead of Ayodele.
This is a side note just in case you don't already realize he is
probably the best defender in the NFC. This has nothing to do with
his nine sacks. The guy has 63 tackles in a defense that hasn't
racked up a lot of tackles (You usually see gaudy tackling numbers
on a defense that can't get off the field). Our leading tackler is
Bradie James with 69. Roy Williams is second with 66. Ware is
playing a position that isn't conducive to racking up tackles. He has
24 more tackles than Akin Ayodele. That is pretty bad because
Ayodele plays WILB which is the best position to pile up tackles.
Greg Ellis is playing great with 8.5 sacks, but he only has 19 total
tackles. That means that nearly half of Greg's tackles are coming
off sacks. I know he has a tight end to deal with, but that isn't great.
Ware has nearly as many as those two starters combined. Chew
on that because every Cowboys fan should realize that when they
look at guy like him that is the reason this team is 10-1. We might
have the best defensive player in the NFL and he is only in his third
season.
Our kick-off coverage continues to struggle. We are putting our
defense at a huge disadvantage when we continually give the
opposing team the ball at our own 35.
Tony Romo didn't have his best game of the year. He is the only
thing keeping this game from being way worse for the Jets. He
repeatedly underthrew receivers. This led to his interception and it
cost him another TD pass to Jason Witten. This just reminds you
not to take his great accuracy for granted. I'm guilty of not giving
Romo credit from the Redskins game. Yes, Owens did a great job
of getting open on his four TD passes, but if Romo misfires on just
one of those passes we might have lost the game. Think about that
for a second. Most quarterbacks in the NFL would love to hit on
three of those four passes.
Hopefully he will eat his Wheaties before the Packers game and be
right on the money against his idol Brett Favre. I don't know how
well our defense will do Thursday night so it might be a shootout.
Tim's Talk: Week 13
1. Well this was a tale of two different games. One game the
defense could not stop the passing game and was letting receivers
get open left and right. The other, the passing game is getting
crushed. So what defense will show up? We need consistency on
this side of the ball. The offense is just fine. In fact, it is a great
offense. But I cannot say that about the defense. You win
championships with defense. Remember the '85 Bears and the '00
Ravens? They virtually had no offense. The defenses were just that
good. I am not saying an elite offense can't win the Super Bowl. But
even teams that had elite offenses also had great defenses. The
problem is that the offense gets the glory. The 49ers of the 80s and
the Cowboys of the nineties all had great defenses. So that was
able to offset that. This Cowboys defense is good but I cannot say
with a straight face that it is an elite group. The offfense I can but if
we make it to the Super Bowl, I just have a feeling what team it will
be and you know we will have trouble all day if this group the way it
does.
2. On the other hand you can make the argument the Jets offense
is just that much worse than the Redskins offense and the Redskins
had more weapons. But the playoffs are not typically filled with bad
offenses. But why was Chris Cooley getting so wide open. Every
time they throw I knew he was going to get going. I do not know if it
was personnel, meaning we did not have the talent to match the
receivers or poor defensive play calling. I think our run defense gets
too much credit for stopping the run because most of the teams we
face are trailing so they tend to abandon the run and start passing.
Now having said that I do think the passing defense is mediocre. I
mean the numbers do not take into account the clutch catches or
completions for first down. I mean Chris Cooley was getting wide
open and does not always translate to big yards. I mean the key to
any good defense is stopping the third down play.
3. TO is just amazing me. I would name him offensive player of the
year and Romo MVP. Of course I feel that Randy Moss and Tom
Brady will get those accolades but hey I am biased.
4. Terence Newman has played like a Pro Bowler the last couple of
seasons and has not gone because he lacks the big plays.
Hopefully that interception TD return against the Jets plus the game
winning interception against the Redskins will let him go. Plus he is
still battling that plantar fasscitis.
5. I guess someone reminded Julius Jones that he was in a contract
year because lately he is tearing it up. I still feel he will be gone at
the end of the year and the Cowboys will draft a running back in the
upcoming draft.
6. Roy Williams start streak was snapped. Who cares? That is so
overrated. I mean you get in on the opening play and that is
considered a start? I think the majority of snaps taken should be the
deciding factor on how much a guy plays.
7. I feel that was Joe Gibbs last visit to Texas Stadium. As much as I
dislike the Redskins, you can not help but like Gibbs. I will miss him.
I wish Jason Campbell was leaving though. He is going to be a
threat to the Boys for the next few years.
8. The special teams has got to get going. I do not feel like the
special teams is a necessary evil, where I would just put random
people in there. I would use the draft to draft players specifically for
special teams and to look at a players ability to play special teams
alongside his own position. The kicking/punting is fine, it is the
coverage that is soft.
9. Now comes the game of the year part 2. Part 1 was the Patriots. I
guess the Giants could have been a part 2 but I am not going to
give it that. The Packers have now discovered a running game with
the emergence of Ryan Grant. Donald Driver is the big play threat
with Donald Lee the huge tight end. Charles Woodson and Al Harris
are the corner threats and the two huge pass rush in Aaron
Kampan and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. Almost sounds like the
Cowboys doesn't? And I have not mentioned the quarterbacks with
Romo being a younger version of Brett Favre, with that gunslinger
mentality. I predict an average score, Cowboys 24, Packers 17. I
don't feel the offenses will get a lot of points, most of the Packers
games have come down to the wire and have been low scoring, but
I don't think it will be a shootout like the Patriots or Giants game.
10. Why NFL do you want to hold this game on the NFL Network?
Where is the strategy on that. If I am in charge of making sure
America sees my product, I want to make sure 95% of the
households can see my product. Not 35%. I blame both sides but I
strongly blame the NFL. I mean no one will watch this network
except for the games and the games have to be close. If it is
anything like the Colts-Falcons, no one will watch. I have taken a
glimpse at NFL Total Access and I am sorry, if ESPN jumped the
shark with all the overexposure and over analysis, then you have
done the same as well.
11. Obviously my cable company does not carry NFL Network but I
am not worried. I will be at the game in section 133 so I do not have
to worry. Go Cowboys!
12. On the other hand, shame on all you ebayers trying to make a
profit from the true fan. I wish someone would come up with a way to
sell these tickets to the fan and not these ticket brokers and
merchants looking to cash in on the true fans. Of course I gave in
but hey what is a guy to do huh?
