Cowboy's
Trivia
Question of
the Week!

Who is the oldest
player on the
Cowboys' roster?

Last Week's Answer:

Danny White
Zach Thomas Will Make An Impact

Dallas signed Zach Thomas today.  The deal is for 1 year and 2
million dollars with another million in easy to obtain incentives.  A lot
of fans may be down on this move, but I like it.

Thomas is only a year removed from a two year stretch were he
recorded 329 tackles in a 3-4.  That doesn't sound like a guy that
doesn't have anything left.  He missed some time last season due
to concussions, but he doesn't have a history of concussions.

There is obviously a risk involved in signing a 34 year old, but to
me the possible rewards outweight the risk.  At worst, you waste 2
or 3 mil on a guy that doesn't help you much.  At best, you get a
Hall of Fame linebacker who can potentially still play at a Pro Bowl
level.  Zach Thomas is a playmaker which is something we lack at
inside linebacker.  Akin Ayodele is solid, but he has always struck
me as a guy that we needed to upgrade if at all possible.

Thomas is a definite upgrade.  The guy has more tackles than any
player in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Let that sink in for a few
seconds.  He is also a lot more athletic and he is much better in
coverage.  The main thing he brings to the table though is
leadership.  We lack a true leader on defense and now we have
one.  He also has tons of heart which is another thing I think we
could use more of.  Cowboys fans will fall in love with this guy when
they see him play.  He is a better version of Dat Nguyen who was
one of my favorite players to ever play for Dallas.

This move likely means the end for Akin Ayodele in Dallas.  We
don't really need him for depth considering we have both Carpenter
and Burnett who both seem fairly capable.  Look for him to be
traded or cut sometime this off-season although it may not be until
after June 1st.

This move also tells me that we have plenty of ways to create salary
cap space.  With Barber and Canty's projected tenders, Hamlin's
franchise tag, and this signing, on paper we wouldn't even have
enough money to re-sign Flozell Adams.  I kind of doubt that is the
case because we are still talking to him and his agent and I don't
think we would sign Thomas if it meant no shot at Adams.

This move to me says an awful lot about Bobby Carpenter and
Kevin Burnett.  I thought Burnett looked better than Ayodele last
season, but we jumped at the opportunity to bring in a veteran at a
spot with two high draft picks.  If either guy looked very good, we
wouldn't have made this move.

Another Juicy Rumor

I read a report that says Dallas is pursuing DeAngelo Hall.  A
proposed trade has Dallas sending their 1st pick (#22), a 4th
rounder, Anthony Henry, and Akin Ayodele for the Falcons two 2nd
round picks.  The draft picks pretty much even out according to the
draft pick value chart (maybe a slight edge to Dallas) which
basically makes it Henry and Ayodele for Hall.  Now that doesn't
really solve our CB problem since we would still only have two good
ones, but we would get younger.  Another snag is the guaranteed
money left on Henry's contract.  A third and potentially the biggest
snag would be Hall's contract.  We would want to sign him to an
extension as he becomes a free agent next season.  He would
command nearly as much as Asante Samuel and if we could afford
that why not just go after Samuel and give up nothing.
Top Free Agent Targets

These are the guys I think Dallas might actually be interested.  I’m
not including players like Michael Turner, Alan Faneca, or Justin
Smith because those aren’t positions of need.

1.        LT Flozell Adams – I think he should be the number one
target for the Cowboys.  He is a franchise left tackle and I’m not sold
on the guys we have on our roster right now.  We have the right
quarterback to have protection problems, but I would do everything
within reason to re-sign Adams.

2.        CB Asante Samuel – He will get too much money to be a
viable option for Dallas.  If the salary cap didn’t exist I’d love to have
him, but the reality is you can only have so many high priced
corners and we already have two.

3.        WR Bernard Berrian – This guy is very intriguing and I
wouldn’t be surprised to see Dallas pursue him.  He is a great deep
threat and he seems to be improving his all-around game.  He
would be the perfect complement to Owens, but that is the problem
he is simply a complement.  He is a #2 receiver that will probably get
a 5-7 year deal worth 6-8 million a year.  I don’t think I want him bad
enough to give him a 6yr/42 mil contract although there would be
worse ways to spend the money.

4.        CB Drayton Florence – Florence is the perfect guy if we
are determined on really improving our cornerbacks.  He was a solid
starter in San Diego until Antonio Cromartie unseated him halfway
through last season.  He is still young, but he will give us experience
as well.  I’m not sure he would want to play in Dallas though
because he will want to start for someone.  He could possibly be
able to beat out Anthony Henry, but I wouldn’t count on that.  In the
end, I think we will pass because you have to pay so much for what
is really just a good solid player.   Someone will probably give him a
contract worth 5/6 mil a year.  Again, I’m not sure I want to give a
3rd cornerback a 4yr/24 mil contract although you could debate that
he could easily be starting by 2009 with Henry’s age and Newman’s
expiring contract.

5.        LT Max Starks – Starks was a starter at right tackle in 05’
and 06’ for the Steelers.   He lost his job in training camp last
season, but he played really well at left tackle when the starter got
hurt.  He is 6’8 335 and he could remind our management of a
young Flozell Adams.  For the right price, he wouldn’t be a bad guy
to bring into the fold if we are unable to sign Flozell Adams.

6.        WR – Donte Stallworth – This guy could be a solid addition
to our offense.  He isn’t a great receiver, but he can fill a role.  He
could bring some much needed athleticism to our receiving corp.

7.        CB – Fernando Bryant – Bryant was a fairly high priced
free agent corner the Lions signed in 2004.  Bryant was a promising
young starter in Jacksonville.  He struggled through injuries his first
three years in Detroit before having a good season last year.  He
was cut because his base salary was close to five million for next
season.  He was a disappointment in Detroit, but for the right price
he would make a really good third corner and he was nowhere near
the worst starting CB in the NFL last year.

8.        WR Bryant Johnson – This guy was a 1st round draft pick
of the Cardinals in 2003.  He hasn’t lived up to his potential, but he
put up decent numbers last season (46 catches, 528 yards).  He
could be one of those guys just waiting to get an opportunity.

9.        CB Randall Gay – Gay had a great rookie season, but he
disappeared for two years.  He came back last season and did a
good job as the Patriots nickel corner.  I can’t imagine the Pats
letting him and Samuel walk, but if they do this guy would definitely
be an upgrade over Jacques Reeves.

10.        WR D.J. Hackett – As you can see, there are a lot of
decent wide receivers available.  This was a guy I was really high on
last season, but he couldn’t stay healthy.  He has a lot of talent
though and he was productive in the six games he played in.

One More Rumor

The latest guy on the trading block appears to be Javon Walker.
Dallas is rumored to be interested.  I don't know much about his
injuries, but I do know he is only 29 and he was a heck of a player in
the past.
